Mount Bromo, or Gunung Bromo, is one of Indonesia’s most famous active volcanoes. It’s part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The park features vast volcanic plains called the “Sea of Sand” (Segara Wedi). Mount Bromo is set within a stunning landscape of mountains and cliffs. Despite not being the highest peak, it is the most famous and active volcano in the park.
The highlight of the Mount Bromo experience is the sunrise tour. You’ll see the first light of day illuminating the caldera, creating an ethereal glow over the landscape. From the viewpoint at Mount Penanjakan, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire volcanic complex. This includes Mount Semeru, Java’s highest peak, smoking in the distance.
Ijen Crater, also known as Kawah Ijen, is another must-see geological marvel in East Java. It’s famous for its stunning turquoise sulfur lake and unique blue flames. The blue flames, caused by the burning of sulfuric gases, create a surreal spectacle that attracts visitors worldwide. This, along with the crater’s sulfur mining activities, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and human endeavor.
The trek to Ijen Crater is both challenging and rewarding. You’ll hike up through lush greenery and rocky paths. At the top, you’ll find a vast turquoise lake surrounded by cliffs and smoking fumaroles. Watching miners carry heavy loads of sulfur up the crater walls adds a poignant human element to this natural wonder.
